Background

I have been programming in some capacity since I was 12, but my first real, large, working programs were started around 2018. Since then, I have worked on a few larger projects and several smaller ones, mostly from my own interest. These include low-level development in C, high-level development in Haskell, many experiments with Lisp and Lua and Python, and many other things in between.

I learn very fast, and with the help of good documentation, could probably work with any language or framework.

I can write good documentation.

My usual architecture style could best be summarized as procedural with functional ideas. I try to avoid mutation, and to keep it local whenever possible. I try to keep my code simple and free of unnecessary architecture. I’d rather put existing, working code on a fitting architecture than try to architect before the code works.

I try to ensure my code is debuggable, and try to design for bug avoidance. Whenever a subtle bug is found, I try to ensure it can be detected early next time, instead of causing problems. I’m a big fan of asserts for supposedly impossible conditions, and this has worked well in the past.

I am a fan of snapshot testing to prevent regressions and help develop new features. But any sufficiently convenient test setup works as well.

I studied some design for fun, and in a pinch, can make a decent-looking UI (but don’t hire me as a UX designer, it’s not my specialty).

I am fairly good at translation, either Portuguese/English or technical/non-technical. This skill has been useful in unexpected situations, such as communicating with management and the occasional international meeting.

• 2018–2022: Universidade de São Paulo, Bacharelado em Sistemas de Informação. Standard CS curriculum, plus some management courses.

Expectations from a workplace

• Remote work (willing to work in person occasionally)
• Flexible work hours
• A 1–2 week long vacation roughly every 6 months
• Direct communication with stakeholders to clarify requirements
• No excessive meetings (dailies are fine, just not much more than that)
• No arbitrary changes required in my workflow and tools (Linux command-line)

For maintenance of existing systems:

• All relevant code available and in version control
• Debugging and bug reproduction workflow already settled
• Any manual processes should be well-documented
• Automated tests for non-trivial features
• Up-to-date dependencies

For creation of new systems:

• Clear goal and vision
• Clear priorities
• Permission to choose the technology (with input from the stakeholders)

Ethics

I am a Christian with clear moral standards and will not work on anything unethical. I will not implement dark patterns, digital surveillance, algorithmic recommendations designed to be addicting, targeted advertising (because it requires surveillance), or analytics with unnecessary personal data collection.

I always explain my solution and reasoning in excessive detail, to make sure that everyone understands what is going on. This often reveals a miscommunication before it causes bigger problems.

I don’t need LLMs to work. I also don’t consider haste as a virtue.

Fields of work
